Job Description

Onsite: Minimum 8 hours/week, up to 20 hours/week

Department Overview:
Cedars-Sinai Cancer Center is dedicated to reducing health disparities through cutting-edge research and impactful community outreach. Our team conducts behavioral and clinical research focusing on cancer prevention and substance use in under-served populations, and evaluates outreach programs aimed at increasing cancer awareness.

Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly motivated Research Intern to join our team for an exceptional opportunity to gain hands-on experience in behavioral research, particularly in cancer prevention and substance use. Under the guidance of Dr. Castellon-Lopez, the intern will support qualitative data coding, assist with literature reviews, data collection, statistical and qualitative analyses, and contribute to scientific writing and presentation preparation.

This internship is designed for students pursuing careers in behavioral science, public health, or related fields who are looking to deepen their understanding of community-based research and its real-world applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct systematic literature reviews and assist in preparing background materials.
  • Code qualitative data and assist with ongoing behavioral research projects.
  • Perform quantitative data analysis using statistical software.
  • Participate in scientific writing for manuscripts, abstracts, and posters.
  • Disseminate and collect data from participants in community settings.
  • Attend weekly in-person meetings with the principal investigator to discuss progress and goals.
  • Complete required research training modules (CITI, HIPAA, etc.).

Learning Objectives & Mentorship:

  • Gain understanding of the research process within an academic institution.
  • Learn general practices in community outreach and community-based research.
  • Receive ongoing mentorship and a structured plan including regular evaluations and goal-setting.
  • Final project deliverables may include co-authorship on a peer-reviewed publication and/or poster presentation.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Life or Physical Sciences, Public Health, Psychology, or related field (or in progress).
  • Minimum 2 years of undergraduate lab or coursework in a relevant discipline.
  • Strong interest in behavioral research, health equity, and community outreach.
  • Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research setting.
