Overview of Department & Mentor
The Neuroimaging program/Sati Laboratory under the Department of Neurology studies methods for advancing image acquisition techniques and analysis of imaging data for neurological disorders. The lab focuses on the development of novel imaging biomarkers, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, and artificial intelligence (AI) methods that strive to improve the clinical care offered to those impacted by related disorders. Role Summary & Objectives
Under direct mentorship, the Research Intern will assist in performing laboratory tasks and procedures to develop technical expertise in one or more areas relevant to research projects. The Research Intern will participate in assisting various aspects of research, including but not limited to problem and solution investigation, experimental design, validation of results, and reporting of findings. The Research Intern will be involved in data analysis with presentation of findings to the team.
Role Activities & Timeline
The Research Intern will start by familiarizing themselves with ongoing research projects and identify how their personal goals can align with the larger goals of the Neuroimaging Program. Once a research project has been defined, the intern will lead the project to achieve outlined goals. Training will range from computer programming, data analysis, and, technical writing and presentation skills. With sufficiently achieved goals, participation in dissemination/publication of the completed work is highly encouraged.
Depending on the intended timeline of the internship and areas of interest, the intern will be responsible for one or more of the following:
- Assisting lab members in conducting research tasks.
- Document and present results to team members.
- Communicate progress, challenges, and suggestions to team members.
- Conducting data quality checks including image quality assurance (QA) and image segmentation.
- For candidates with experience in computer programming (Python/MATLAB), assisting in the development and analysis of ongoing research projects within the lab.
Qualifications
Required Education & Experience:
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must have a HS Diploma or GED.
- Must reside in the greater Los Angeles area or surrounding cities while conducting all activities related to the intern or visitor appointment.
- INTERNS: Those participating for academic credit must receive academic credit for the duration of the internship.
- VISITORS: Must be receiving funding from an eligible sponsoring institution (employer, educator, funder, etc.).
Preferred Education & Experience:
- Must be currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Mathematics, Biology, Computer Science, Statistics, Neurosciences, Computational Biology, or related life and computational sciences.
- Strong interest in pursuing a career in life and computational sciences.
- Applicants with an interest in graduate studies of related fields are strongly preferred.
- Experience in computer programming with languages such as Python, MATLAB, C++, Java, and bash.
