Job Description
The Pathologists' Assistant is a professional person who is qualified by academic and practical training to provide service in Anatomic Pathology. Responsibilities include dissecting and grossly describing tissue specimens, assisting with and teaching pathology dissection techniques to residents, coordinating teaching conferences and organizing and maintaining teaching materials. Duties may also include assisting with QA statistics reports and clinical research. Performs all job duties with sensitivity and attention to the developmental issues of the patient population(s) being served
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Performs surgical specimen dissection by ensuring appropriate specimen accessioning and obtaining representative sections for histologic examination. Submits requests for special histologic procedures and special stains as appropriate. Insures that photographs and x-rays are takes as necessary
Assists with the performance of frozen sections as needed.
Assists with the appropriate triaging of specimens to insure that workflow ensures efficient tissue processing to meet histology slide production TAT.
Provides technical assistance to prosectors (pathologists and residents) for all postmortem examinations, i.e., preparation prior to autopsy, assistance with procuring all organs, completion of autopsy, assists with obtaining photographic images and x-rays as needed.
Collaborates in research, development and implementation of new procedures, methodologies and quality assurance protocols.
Participates in special projects or assignments.
Verifies specimen identification, assesses specimen quality by recognizing factors that affect appropriate tissue processing; takes appropriate action when corrections are indicated
Effectively assesses and adjusts to a variable workload with regard to the number and complexity of cases and provides assistance as needed to allow for efficient specimen processing
Provides appropriate educational experience for pathology residents in the correct dissection procedures and techniques
Reviews new and existing policies and procedures; prepares technical procedures.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelors in Science in a Health Science
- One year of Pathology experience required
- Pathology Assistant Certification (ASCP) preferred
